Development History of Omni-directional Transfer Vehicles

‌The development history of omni-directional transfer vehicles can be divided into the following main stages‌:

Starting stage
The concept and technology of omni-directional transfer vehicles began to sprout in the 1950s. In 1953, the first AGV (Automated Guided Vehicle) was born. It was transformed from a simple AGC product traction tractor with a cart, transporting goods along the wires arranged in the air in a grocery warehouse. Subsequently, AGV-related research began to take off and was gradually promoted and applied in Europe and the United States.

Technical development stage
In the 1970s, with the popularization of microprocessor and computer technology and the maturity of servo drive technology, the design of AGV became more flexible and complex. In 1972, Kollmorgen NDC led the development and installation of the first modern automated guided vehicle system at the Volvo Kalmar factory‌ . During this period, the application scope of AGV gradually expanded, especially in the automotive industry and flexible manufacturing systems.

Industrialization stage
In the 1980s, AGV technology developed rapidly in the United States and Europe, the number of manufacturers increased, and the technical level and application scope also increased significantly. General Motors of the United States completed the first flexible assembly system in 1984 and became the largest user of AGV at that time. During this period, AGV had a larger transportation volume, shorter transfer time, and higher reliability of trolleys and controllers, which marked the gradual maturity of AGV technology and applications.

Globalization stage
In the 1990s, Japan also began to pay attention to the development of AGV, and attached great importance to AGV after 1976, established multiple manufacturers, and promoted the further development of AGV technology. At the same time, AGV applications around the world have gradually expanded to more fields, such as flexible manufacturing systems and assembly lines.

Modern application stage
In the 21st century, AGV technology continues to develop and its application scope is more extensive. Modern AGV systems are not only widely used in manufacturing, but also play an important role in logistics, warehousing and other fields. With the continuous advancement of technology and changes in market demand, AGV systems have become more intelligent and efficient, improving production efficiency and logistics management level.
