20 Ton Differential Drive Battery-powered Industrial Transfer Cart

In the machinery manufacturing and steel industries, the in-plant transportation of 20 ton heavy materials has long suffered pain points including high rail laying costs, fixed travel routes and poor flexibility. Featuring trackless operation, in-place rotation capability and high-load structure, the differential drive battery electric transfer cart has become a preferred alternative to traditional rail flatcars and overhead crane lifting.

This 20 ton differential battery trackless transfer cart is custom-designed for our Dutch client. The client's site has confined space and needs to transport materials of various sizes. To meet the requirements of a compact transfer cart body while handling large-size materials, we developed an expandable platform. The trolley's overall dimension is 4000×2000×900 mm. It can move freely and be stored easily in tight spaces. When operating outdoors and transporting large workpieces, the platform can be expanded to 6000×4000×900 mm (L×W×H). Just like a transformer, it can extend in length, width, or expand on all four sides.

This 20 ton trackless transfer cart adopts dual-wheel differential drive: each side is controlled by an independent motor. Steering is realized by adjusting the speed difference between the two drive wheels, with front and rear casters as follow-up supports. This mechanical structure enables the vehicle to move forward, backward, turn left/right and even perform 360° in-place rotation with a theoretical zero turning radius, without extra steering mechanisms. For steel workshops with narrow aisles and dense equipment, it allows the transfer cart to travel freely in limited space below crane rails, instead of being restricted by fixed tracks.

Workpieces in machinery workshops are mostly large moulds, castings and assembly components with irregular shapes and high risk of offset center of gravity. The independent motor control of the differential drive keeps the transfer cart travelling straight under eccentric load conditions and prevents deviation caused by uneven resistance on either side. The wireless remote control reaches up to 400 meters, allowing operators to carry out high-precision positioning from a safe distance.

Steel industry environments are harsher. Materials such as steel coils, steel billets and rolls are heavy and have high surface temperatures; explosion-proof requirements apply to some processes. The industrial transfer cart can be customized with high-temperature resistance and explosion-proof options, and the protection grade of the electrical system can be upgraded accordingly. The electromagnetic brake system automatically engages upon power loss to prevent sliding on slopes or uncontrolled load movement in case of sudden power cut.
